Veteran’s Day Rembrance

Today’s Bible Verses:
Psalm 144:1-2
ESV

Blessed be the Lord, my rock, who trains my hands for war, and my fingers for battle; he is my steadfast love and my fortress, my stronghold and my deliverer, my shield and he in whom I take refuge, who subdues peoples under me.

Today, we honor our veterans—those who have served to protect and defend the freedom of others. Their courage, sacrifice, and devotion to duty remind us of Jesus’ words: "Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends" (John 15:13). Veterans demonstrate a willingness to sacrifice, sometimes at great personal cost, to serve others.

Lutherans are reminded that God calls people into various vocations to serve Him and others. The vocation of a soldier is one of unique strength and commitment, but God equips those who are called to serve. Psalm 144 highlights the psalmist’s reliance on God as a shield, refuge, and source of strength in the face of conflict. Like the psalmist, veterans often rely on strength and wisdom that only God can give, navigating the trials and hardships of service with courage and integrity.

Today, let us pray for our veterans and their families, asking God to bless them with peace and gratitude for their service. For those who bear physical and emotional wounds, may God grant healing. For those still serving, may God be their steadfast shield and deliverer. And may we, as a community of faith, honor them with our prayers, support, and respect.

Prayers

A Prayer for Veteran’s Day:

Heavenly Father, we thank You for the men and women who have served and continue to serve in our armed forces. Thank You for their dedication, courage, and selfless love. Be with them, Lord, as You were with David in his battles, and may they find comfort, healing, and peace in Your presence. Strengthen us to honor them and to work for peace in our world, guided by Your love. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

Luther’s Morning Prayer:

I thank You, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, Your dear Son, that You have kept me this night from all harm and danger; and I pray that You would keep me this day also from sin and every evil, that all my doings and life may please You. For into Your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all things. Let Your holy angel be with me, that the evil foe may have no power over me. Amen.

Apostles’ Creed:

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.

And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

The Lord’s Prayer:

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.
