Anchored to Our Lord
Today’s Bible Verse:
John 14:27 ESV
(Jesus said) “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.”
Jesus speaks these words not from a place of ease but in the shadow of His approaching crucifixion. Even knowing what lay ahead, His priority was to prepare His disciples for the turmoil that would soon shake their world. In this verse, Christ offers a gift—His peace, unlike anything the world can provide.
We often envision a life free from struggles or conflict when we think of peace. Yet, the peace Jesus offers does not mean an absence of trouble. It assures that God is present and in control, even in our storms. The world’s peace is fleeting and conditional. It depends on circumstances, prosperity, or the approval of others. But the peace of Christ is rooted in the certainty of God’s love and anchors us to God’s promises.
Jesus knows our human tendency to worry, fear, and be troubled by things we cannot control. He does not minimize the reality of these struggles, but He offers us a different way to respond. “Let not your hearts be troubled,” He says, calling us to trust in His presence and His provision. This is a call not to deny or suppress our feelings but to entrust them to the One who holds all things together.
How can we live in this peace? It begins with resting in the truth of who Jesus is. He is our Savior, our Comforter, and our King. Through His death and resurrection, He secured peace between God and us. When we abide in Him, we can face our circumstances with a heart anchored in His promises. We remember that He is with us, that He goes before us, and that He is making all things new.
Prayers
A Prayer for Today:
Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of Your peace. In the midst of my struggles and fears, help me to rest in Your promises. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.
Luther’s Morning Prayer:
I thank You, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, Your dear Son, that You have kept me this night from all harm and danger; and I pray that You would keep me this day also from sin and every evil, that all my doings and life may please You. For into Your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all things. Let Your holy angel be with me, that the evil foe may have no power over me. Amen.
Apostles’ Creed:
I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.
And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
The Lord’s Prayer:
Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.
