The Unity of Father and Son
Today’s Bible Verse:
John 10:30 ESV
(Jesus said) “I and the Father are one.”
This short but profound verse from the Gospel of John is a cornerstone of Christian theology, and for us Lutherans, it speaks volumes about the nature of God and our relationship with Him.
Jesus' statement, "I and the Father are one," declares His inherent unity with God the Father. This isn't a unity of mere purpose or will, but a deep, ontological unity of essence. Jesus, the Son, shares the same divine nature as the Father. This reinforces the Trinity, the core doctrine that God exists as three distinct persons – Father, Son, and Holy Spirit – yet is one God in essence.
Knowing that Jesus and the Father are one brings immense comfort. When we pray to Jesus, we are praying to God. When we trust in Jesus, we are trusting in God. We have direct access to the Father through the Son.
This verse illuminates the power of Christ's sacrifice. Because Jesus is one with the Father, His death on the cross was a genuinely divine act, sufficient to atone for the entire world's sins.
As Christians, we are called to strive for unity with one another, just as Jesus and the Father are one. This means loving our neighbor, forgiving those who have wronged us, and working together to build up the body of Christ.
As you know, Lutherans hold firmly to the doctrine of the Trinity and the divinity of Christ. We believe that salvation comes solely through grace, received by faith in Jesus Christ. John 10:30 underscores this belief, demonstrating that our faith is placed in the true God, the one who is both Father and Son.

A Prayer for Today:
Heavenly Father, thank you for sending your Son, Jesus, to be our Savior. Help me to grasp the magnitude of His divine unity with you and to live in the light of that truth. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.
Luther’s Morning Prayer:
I thank You, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, Your dear Son, that You have kept me this night from all harm and danger; and I pray that You would keep me this day also from sin and every evil, that all my doings and life may please You. For into Your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all things. Let Your holy angel be with me, that the evil foe may have no power over me. Amen.
Apostles’ Creed:
I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.
And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
The Lord’s Prayer:
Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.
