Our Faithful Lives Start with Adam

Today’s Bible Verse:
1 Chronicles 1:1
ESV

Adam, Seth, Enosh

A few weeks ago, the topic of biblical genealogies came up during Bible class. I’ve never taken the time to study the genealogies in the Bible. Since then, I’ve looked into the lineage of faithful people in this lengthy list that leads to Jesus Christ.

1 Chronicles 1:1 opens with a simple yet profound statement: "Adam, Seth, Enosh." It's the beginning of a long genealogy, tracing the lineage of Israel's kings back to the very first man. At first glance, it might seem like a dry list of names. But within this genealogy lies a powerful message of God's faithfulness and the enduring nature of His promises.

This opening verse reminds us that our faith is not rooted in abstract ideas but in a concrete history. The genealogy in 1 Chronicles connects us to the unbroken chain of God's covenant people, stretching back to Adam. It's a reminder that we are part of something much bigger than ourselves - a story that began in the Garden of Eden and continues to unfold today.

The genealogy also highlights the importance of lineage in God's plan. It traces the line of David, from whom Jesus, the Messiah, would ultimately descend. This reminds us that God's promises are not arbitrary but fulfilled through specific individuals and families. It underscores the importance of faithfulness within families and the passing down of faith from generation to generation.

Finally, this verse points us to the ultimate source of our hope: Jesus Christ. The genealogy in 1 Chronicles culminates in the coming of the Savior, who fulfills God's promises in a way that no human ancestor could. Through Jesus, we are grafted into the family of God, regardless of our earthly lineage. We become heirs to the eternal promises of God, not through our own merit, but through the grace of Christ.

PRAYERS

Keep in Your Prayers:

  1. All people dealing with cancer

  2. Those who reject Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior.

A Prayer for Today:

Heavenly Father, I thank you for the rich history of your people, as revealed in the Bible's genealogies. Help me to see myself as part of this ongoing story, connected to the saints of old and to the ultimate fulfillment of your promises in Jesus Christ. In Jesus' name, I pray. Amen.

Luther’s Morning Prayer:

I thank You, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, Your dear Son, that You have kept me this night from all harm and danger; and I pray that You would keep me this day also from sin and every evil, that all my doings and life may please You. For into Your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all things. Let Your holy angel be with me, that the evil foe may have no power over me. Amen.

Apostles’ Creed:

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.

And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

The Lord’s Prayer:

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.
