It Was Very Good

Today’s Bible Verse:
Genesis 1:31
ESV

And God saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good. And there was evening and there was morning, the sixth day.

When I was growing up, the best jelly doughnuts were at Busy Bakers on Lake Avenue in Yonkers, New York. Since they closed a couple of decades ago, I’ve never found an equal-in-taste jelly doughnut anywhere. Of course, that is my opinion. Some people love jelly doughnuts at Dunkin’. That is their opinion. I find them too pillowy and sweet.

I bring the doughnut thing up because I’ve heard many people talk about how bad our world is, whether because of wars and rumors of wars or how we’ve treated it. Stewardship over this earth is on a lot of people’s minds. As I’ve listened to others talk about this world of ours, I wondered what it was like when God decided to create everything.

We do know that after creating all things, God looked over what He had done and found it to be very good—not just good or OK, “very good.” This place God gave us to be stewards of shows us God’s incredible love for us. He gave us all that we needed to support our lives. This very good planet of ours is our home and we should treat it well.

PRAYERS

Keep in Your Prayers:

  1. Those struggling to make ends meet.

  2. All people dealing with cancer

  3. Those who reject Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior.

A Prayer for Today:

I struggle, dear Father, over how to be a good steward of my small part of the world You gave Your people to live on. Guide me to do good toward Your “very good” world. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

Luther’s Morning Prayer:

I thank You, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, Your dear Son, that You have kept me this night from all harm and danger; and I pray that You would keep me this day also from sin and every evil, that all my doings and life may please You. For into Your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all things. Let Your holy angel be with me, that the evil foe may have no power over me. Amen.

Apostles’ Creed:

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.

And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

The Lord’s Prayer:

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.
