Memories

Today’s Bible Verse:
2 Corinthians 5:17
ESV

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.

Every day, I receive a morning email from the National Day Calendar that tells me what is a special remembrance for today. They don’t just tell subscribers that on June 6th, we remember the storming of Normandy cliffs in World War II and the start of the liberation of Europe, but also what would be considered lighthearted. For instance, today is National Doughnut Day (Dunkin’ is offering a free classic doughnut with the purchase of a beverage; 7-11 is offering a glazed doughnut for a dollar) and National VCR Day. Do you remember VCRs? Young people today will never know the joy of putting one of those large cassettes you picked up at Blockbuster Video into the Video Cassette Recorder to watch a movie. Oh, and don’t forget to rewind!

Memories are important to everyone. We look at photographs in a scrapbook or on our phones and recall something from the past that hopefully brings us joy. When Christians reflect on our past, we can ponder something that challenged us. Yet God wants us to think about something deeper - Him sending His Son to die for our sins on the cross, fulfilling His promise to save us. At the perfect time in history, Jesus, the incarnate Son of the Almighty, entered our history to shed His blood and die to pay for our sins. We weren’t there when Jesus died, rose, and ascended back to heaven. Our Christian faith tells us of this importance in our history. Let us give thanks to the Father today for saving us.

PRAYERS

Keep in Your Prayers:

  1. Those struggling to make ends meet.

  2. All people dealing with cancer

  3. Those who reject Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior.

A Prayer for Today:

Gracious and loving Father, while I spend time remembering life’s events during my day, embolden Your Spirit within me to remember the greatest act of time - Jesus dying for my sins. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

Luther’s Morning Prayer:

I thank You, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, Your dear Son, that You have kept me this night from all harm and danger; and I pray that You would keep me this day also from sin and every evil, that all my doings and life may please You. For into Your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all things. Let Your holy angel be with me, that the evil foe may have no power over me. Amen.

Apostles’ Creed:

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.

And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

The Lord’s Prayer:

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.
