Overcoming Our Troubles

Today’s Verse:
John 16:33
ESV

I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.”

As we continue our Lenten journey, we are often called to reflect on the suffering and sacrifice of our Lord Jesus Christ. This verse from John reminds us that Jesus was not unaware of the troubles that would happen to his followers and, indeed, the immense tribulation he would face. He doesn't promise us a life free from hardship but acknowledges the reality of the world's brokenness and the challenges we will encounter.

Yet, in this stark reality, Jesus offers a profound and comforting promise: "In me you may have peace." This peace is not an absence of trouble but a deep-seated assurance from being united with Christ. It is a peace that transcends the chaos and anxieties of our world, rooted in God's love and grace.

Furthermore, Jesus declares, "Take heart; I have overcome the world." This is the core of our hope, especially during this season of reflection. Jesus' victory over sin, death, and the powers of darkness on the cross and through his resurrection is also our victory. Though real and sometimes overwhelming, the troubles we face do not have the final say. Because Christ has overcome, we can face our tribulations with courage and hope, knowing that we are securely held in his victorious love.

As we continue through Lent, let us remember these words. When the world's weight feels heavy, when trials and tribulations arise, let us turn to Christ. Let us find peace in him, trusting in his promise that he has overcome the world and that we will find strength and hope through him.

Prayers

A Prayer for Today:

Gracious Lord, I thank You for Your honest words that acknowledge the troubles of this world. I pray for the peace that only You can offer, which sustains us through trials and strengthens Your people in our weakness. Help me always to remember Your victory over the world, and grant us all the courage to face our challenges with faith and hope. In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

Apostles’ Creed:

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.

And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

The Lord’s Prayer:

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.

Luther’s Morning Prayer:

I thank You, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, Your dear Son, that You have kept me this night from all harm and danger; and I pray that You would keep me this day also from sin and every evil, that all my doings and life may please You. For into Your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all things. Let Your holy angel be with me, that the evil foe may have no power over me. Amen.
