God’s Plan from the Beginning

Today’s Verse:
Genesis 3:15
ESV

I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel.

This Lent, we taking a look at the Gospel messages found in the first book of the Bible, Genesis, I thought on Wednesdays we’d review some of them. This week, the very first Gospel in all of the Bible - Genesis 3:15.

Sin had just entered the world. Adam and Eve, once clothed in innocence, now stood before God in guilt and shame. The curse of sin was real—pain, toil, and death would now define human life. But right in the midst of judgment, God spoke a word of promise.

Genesis 3:15 is often called the Protoevangelium—the first Gospel. In this verse, God declared war against Satan and foretold the coming of One who would crush the serpent’s head. Though the serpent would wound Him, this coming Savior would ultimately win the victory. This is the first glimpse of Jesus Christ in Scripture.

On the cross, Christ’s heel was bruised—He suffered, bled, and died. But in His resurrection, He crushed the power of sin, death, and the devil. The war that began in Eden was decisively won at Calvary. And for those who trust in Christ, His victory becomes ours.

Even today, we feel the effects of that first fall—temptation, suffering, and the battle against sin rage on. But Genesis 3:15 reminds us that God had a plan from the very beginning. No matter how dark the world seems, the victory has already been won. Jesus, the promised offspring, has conquered, and in Him, we have eternal hope.

Prayers

A Prayer for Today:

Heavenly Father, thank You for Your promise of salvation from the very beginning. Even when we fall, You provide grace and hope through Jesus Christ. Strengthen us in the battle against sin and remind us that in Christ, the victory is already won In Jesus’ name, I pray. Amen.

Apostles’ Creed:

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth.

And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

The Lord’s Prayer:

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.

Luther’s Morning Prayer:

I thank You, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, Your dear Son, that You have kept me this night from all harm and danger; and I pray that You would keep me this day also from sin and every evil, that all my doings and life may please You. For into Your hands, I commend myself, my body and soul, and all things. Let Your holy angel be with me, that the evil foe may have no power over me. Amen.
